Durban — A devastating fire ripped through the Springfield China Mall in the early hours of Saturday morning, destroying most of the trading complex and raising urgent questions about safety compliance and fire preparedness at one of Durban’s busiest wholesale hubs. The blaze broke out at about 02:10, according to eThekwini Municipality’s Emergency Services Directorate, triggering a large-scale response from more than 25 firefighters drawn from four northern fire stations.
When crews arrived, flames had already engulfed several trading units, with thick smoke and intense heat making rescue efforts dangerous. Firefighters battled the inferno for hours as parts of the structure began collapsing. Officials confirmed that 14 trading units were affected — 12 completely gutted and two badly damaged. While no injuries or fatalities were reported, investigators have launched a forensic
probe into the cause of the fire. Authorities have not ruled out electrical faults, poor storage practices, or possible safety violations — issues that have repeatedly surfaced in inspections of similar high-density trading centres.
China Mall remains closed indefinitely due to severe structural damage, while Fire and Emergency Services, Metro Police and SAPS continue to secure the site. For dozens of traders who depend on the mall for their livelihoods, the destruction could mean millions of rands in losses — and renewed scrutiny over safety enforcement in Durban’s booming import markets.
