The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has dismissed its eThekwini mayoral candidate, Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi, due to allegations of manipulation in the candidate lists submitted to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).
This situation has led to an internal investigation initiated by MKP president Jacob Zuma, following complaints from party members who reportedly found that some properly nominated candidates were absent from the lists sent to the IEC.
The party claims that Hlophe-Mkhwanazi and National Party Liaison Committee member Sibonelo Maphumulo are involved in the alleged manipulation. These allegations remain unproven, and the investigation aims to determine who altered the candidate lists and if the party’s internal nomination procedures were overlooked.
Zuma has also called for the disbandment of the presidential task team associated with this process, highlighting the seriousness with which MKP leadership is addressing the issue.
The investigation poses important questions about who had access to the final candidate lists, who approved the changes, when these changes occurred, and if properly nominated candidates were intentionally left out.
In a significant political shift ahead of the local government elections, MKP has appointed Apostle Mxolisi Phakathi as its new eThekwini mayoral candidate.
The party asserts it will thoroughly investigate what transpired.This controversy could greatly affect MKP’s campaign in eThekwini, where the party aims to achieve a significant breakthrough in the largest metropolitan municipality in the country.
