A desperate attempt to evade the law with cash and braai meat resulted in a motorist being arrested
after Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers refused to accept the bribe during a road safety operation
in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
The dramatic arrest took place at the #NenzaniLaEzweni roadblock in Jozini, uMkhanyakude District,
where officers stopped a speeding vehicle. Further investigations showed that the driver was allegedly
over the legal alcohol limit.
Confronted with arrest, the motorist reportedly tried to make an unusual offer to the officers. Authorities
state he initially proposed R500, then increased it to R700, adding braai meat to his offer in an attempt
to avoid being taken into custody.
However, the bribe attempt failed miserably.
The whole incident was recorded on camera, and the footage is expected to be used as evidence when
the case is presented in court.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma commended the RTI officers
from Jozini for rejecting the bribe and maintaining the law.
“We commend our dedicated RTI team for showing integrity and professionalism,” Duma stated.
He cautioned that bribery poses a threat to good governance but affirmed that law enforcement is
committed to removing reckless and intoxicated drivers from the province’s 34,000km road network.
The motorist now faces charges including drunk driving, speeding, and corruption.
