A brutal clash in a packed Inanda tavern has resulted in a life sentence for a 26-year-
old man whose careless handling of a gun led to a deadly shooting, raising new alarms about gun violence in KwaZulu-Natal’s nightlife. This week, the Ntuzuma Regional Court sentenced Vuyani Lindokuhle Ngubane to life in prison plus 30 years after finding him guilty of murder, robbery with aggravating factors, and illegal possession of a firearm.

Court hearings showed that in July 2023, Ngubane was out with friends at a local tavern while visibly carrying a gun. Witnesses reported that he fired the weapon outside the venue, injuring his own hand before going back inside to find something to stop the bleeding.
Shortly after, patron Xolani Mkhize walked into the tavern.

Prosecutors stated that Ngubane took Mkhize’s cap and tried to wipe blood from his hand on it, leading to a confrontation. The argument escalated outside, where Ngubane and an accomplice reportedly
attacked Mkhize. The accomplice hit him with a beer bottle while Ngubane stole his
cellphone and shot him dead. Ngubane was apprehended two months later with an illegal firearm. His accomplice is still on the run. The court ruled Ngubane unfit to own a firearm, and the National Prosecuting Authority indicated that the sentence demonstrates a strong stance against violent crime.
