UMkhanyakude District Municipality Mayor, Mdaka, is expected to confront the escalating crisis of gender-based violence, teenage pregnancy and substance abuse during a high-level men’s imbizo in Lulwane, Ward 20 under uMhlabuyalingana Local Municipality on Friday. The intervention comes months after the brutal killing of three siblings from the Khumalo family shocked residents and exposed deep-rooted social problems affecting the rural community.

The tragedy drew national attention and intensified pressure on authorities to act decisively against domestic violence and child neglect. Municipal officials say the imbizo will focus on rebuilding broken family structures and encouraging men to take responsibility in protecting women and children. Discussions are expected to centre on toxic masculinity, anger management, alcohol abuse and mental health challenges.

Mental health practitioners from the Department of Social Development will provide counselling services, while the Department of Health will conduct free health screenings. Mayor Mdaka said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to restore dignity, strengthen communities and curb the growing scourge of gender-based violence and femicide in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
