Former Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed worries about the potential hiring of Pitso Mosimane, cautioning that the national team might revert to issues he believes he resolved during his tenure.
Broos, who departed the team after the Fifa World Cup in July, stated that one of his key successes was shielding the national team from external pressures, especially from club owners and football agents.
In an interview with Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad, Broos mentioned his concerns that these problems could resurface if Mosimane takes the helm.
“South Africa could go back five years in time,” Broos cautioned.
He noted that club owners and agents had previously tried to sway player selections, but he stood firm against outside interference.
“I kicked them all out,” Broos remarked. “If one called, I said bluntly: ‘I don’t talk with agents.’”
Mosimane has been named as Safa’s top choice to succeed Broos, although his contract is still pending. Reports indicate that while both sides have tentatively agreed on salary, discussions regarding image rights, his podcast, and his football school project are causing delays.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has also commented, stating that Mosimane should receive fair compensation, at least matching Broos’ salary.
Currently, Mosimane is the leading candidate for the Bafana Bafana position, but Broos’ warning has introduced a new element to the ongoing discussion about the postponed appointment.
