Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has arrived at the Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel and Convention Centre to address the first PSET Research Conference. Dube-Ncube was welcomed by College Principal Mrs. TJ Kula, Council Chairperson Mr. LS Gabela, Deputy Chairperson Ms. N Qhobhosheane, and SRC President Nkululeko Khumalo.
The theme of the conference is: “Future-Ready Occupational Training and Transformative Skills for Entrepreneurship and Employability: Innovations Shaping South Africa’s Workforce of Tomorrow.” This event brings together academics, researchers, policymakers, industry experts, and TVET practitioners to discuss new approaches to skills development and occupational training.
In an interview, the Deputy Minister plans to highlight the importance of preparing young people for the changing job market and ensuring that training institutions provide graduates with skills that improve their job and entrepreneurial prospects. The conference seeks to explore how innovation, research, and partnerships with industry can help create a skilled and future-ready workforce in South Africa.
Dube-Ncube said South Africa’s education and training sector must respond to the changing needs of the economy and equip young people with practical, relevant and adaptable skills.
“We cannot continue preparing young people for jobs that may no longer exist in the future. Our institutions must be innovative and responsive to the needs of industry and the economy,” Dube-Ncube said.
She emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships between government, training institutions and the private sector to create more opportunities for students.
“Our young people must not only leave our colleges and institutions looking for jobs. We must also equip them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to become entrepreneurs and create opportunities for others,” she said.
