Durban – The Boxing South Africa (BSA) is expected to take decisive action this week following a series of controversial incidents involving Lindelani-based coach Sanele “Bhunu” Mthalane, whose conduct has sparked outrage across the local boxing fraternity.
Mthalane has come under fire after publicly insulting promoter Dr Hlula Dladla on Facebook, accusing him of exploiting his boxer, Sanele Maduna, during a recent tournament held in Mtshezi two weeks ago. In his posts, Mthalane claimed Maduna was poorly treated, alleging he was given inappropriate refreshments and forced to fight under unfavourable conditions.
The comments quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from boxers, trainers and promoters alike. Matters escalated further when Mthalane became embroiled in a heated confrontation with fellow coach Sizwe “Bhubesi” Mthembu, who had attempted to intervene and urge restraint. The dispute descended into a war of words, with both parties allegedly exposing personal details about each other.
Ilanga has seen a strongly worded letter from Dladla addressed to the KZN Boxing Federation and forwarded to BSA headquarters in Hatfield, Pretoria. In the letter, Dladla details several grievances, including Mthalane’s conduct at ringside.
“Before the ring announcer declared the winner between Maduna and Sakhile Hlatshwayo, Mthalane made inappropriate remarks suggesting his boxer could only win if he was hungry,” Dladla wrote.
Dladla also accused the coach of delaying proceedings after failing to arrive on time via arranged transport, nearly disrupting the event, which was broadcast on SABC.
BSA Chief Operations Officer Mandla Ntlanganiso confirmed receipt of complaints from both Dladla and Mthembu, stating that the matter would be addressed following the Easter weekend.
Meanwhile, an anonymous coach and promoter warned that Mthalane’s behaviour could negatively impact his fighters’ careers.
Mthalane is related to former world champion Moruti Mthalane, who held both IBF and IBO flyweight titles.
