CHATSWORTH, KZN — A tragic crash on the M1 Higginson Highway near the Westcliffe off-ramp has claimed the life of a man believed to be in his twenties, leaving the local community reminded of the devastating consequences of road accidents.
ALS Paramedics responded to multiple emergency calls shortly after midday on Friday following reports of two separate crashes in the area.
At the eastbound scene, emergency responders found a vehicle that had veered off the highway and come to rest on the railway lines. The driver, who was the sole occupant, was severely trapped inside the wreckage.
Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilise the man, but he went into cardiac arrest and sadly died at the scene. The eThekwini Fire Department assisted with the extrication of his body.
In a separate incident on the westbound carriageway, a pedestrian was reportedly struck by a vehicle. Further information about the pedestrian’s condition was not immediately available.
While the exact circumstances surrounding both crashes remain unknown, the incidents serve as a sobering reminder to motorists and pedestrians about the importance of road safety.
A CALL FOR GREATER ROAD SAFETY
Road users are urged to remain alert, obey traffic regulations, maintain a safe following distance and avoid distractions while driving. Pedestrians are also encouraged to use designated crossing points where available and remain vigilant near busy roads.
Every journey carries a responsibility to protect not only our own lives but also those of other road users. A moment of inattention can have consequences that families and communities may carry for years.
The South African Police Service attended the scene, and investigations into the circumstances of the crashes are expected to continue.
