EVEREST HEIGHTS, KZN — What should have been a routine trip to buy food turned into a frightening ordeal for a family of six when their newly purchased black Ford Figo overturned and landed on its roof in a ditch on Sunday night, 25 October 2026.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at approximately 21:53 and dispatched Reaction Officers to the scene near the junction of Himalaya Road, where they found the vehicle lying upside down below road level.
According to RUSA, the 36-year-old driver told Reaction Officers that he was travelling towards Verulam CBD when a vehicle ahead of him allegedly stopped abruptly. He reportedly swerved to avoid a collision but lost control, causing the car to veer off the road and overturn.
In a startling twist, the driver revealed that he had purchased the vehicle earlier that same day and was taking his family out to buy food when the accident occurred.
The driver sustained abrasions to his head and a finger, while two passengers, aged 16 and 18, complained of body pain.
Three children, aged 9, 11 and 13, reportedly escaped injury.
Paramedics treated the occupants at the scene before transporting all six family members to hospital for further medical assessment.
The circumstances surrounding the crash were handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly an ordinary journey can turn into a potentially life-threatening emergency.
While the family was fortunate to have survived the rollover, the full circumstances of the incident remain subject to further investigation.
