A young child tragically lost their life after allegedly being struck by an eThekwini Municipality water tanker in Ward 96, Adams Mission, south of Durban, on Monday morning.
The South African Police Service has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement, the eThekwini Municipality expressed its condolences to the family, friends and the community of the deceased. The municipality confirmed that it is cooperating fully with the SAPS and has launched its own internal processes.
It added that, because the matter is under investigation, it is not in a position to comment on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The municipality also confirmed that a support team has been deployed to Adams Mission to assist the affected family and appealed to members of the public not to share footage of the incident on social media out of respect for the deceased and their loved ones.
Residents have once again raised concerns about ongoing water shortages in the area, with some alleging that municipal water tanker drivers sell water to households with JoJo tanks instead of supplying affected communities.
These allegations have not been independently verified.
