Africa Takes the Lead in Global Ocean Economy at Durban Summit

News

Durban, KwaZulu-Natal – The 7th Ocean Innovation Africa Summit unfolded over three days at the Durban International Convention Centre, bringing together global leaders, investors, and innovators in a continuous drive toward advancing Africa’s Blue Economy.

From its opening on March 23, hosted in partnership with the eThekwini Municipality, the summit maintained momentum through a series of outcome-focused workshops and high-level engagements. Rather than traditional panel discussions, delegates collaborated across six working sessions, developing actionable strategies and draft policy frameworks aimed at sustainable ocean development.

Throughout the event, Event Director Rex Bowden reiterated the summit’s mission to attract investment, strengthen partnerships, and elevate African-led solutions. Participants from the European Union, Canada, the United States, and across the continent engaged directly with local startups, fostering connections expected to extend beyond the summit.

Key themes such as sustainable fisheries, seaweed farming, and ocean-based climate solutions remained central as discussions evolved into practical commitments. The summit continuously aligned with Durban’s “One Plan” initiative, reinforcing the city’s ambition to become a hub for maritime innovation.

As proceedings progressed seamlessly to March 25, the summit delivered a unified message: Africa’s oceans are not only vital to global sustainability but are central to shaping the future of economic growth and climate resilience.
