EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Councillor Cyril Xaba and Deputy Minister for Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo unveiled R9 million infrastructure and water projects in eNgonyameni, south of Durban on Friday, 23 October.
These projects included a newly constructed access bridge and one-kilometre concrete road which was damaged by reoccurring floods, two rural borehole network and houses from the Vumengazi Rural Housing Project and rectification programme.
These interventions are part of the City’s ongoing service delivery acceleration programme aimed at restoring dignity, driving rural development, and improving the quality of life for residents.
The municipality invested R8 million in the road and bridge project. This crucial development contributes to a safe and reliable transport link for the community, ensuring easier access to public transport, local schools, and healthcare facilities. Concrete infrastructure was selected to withstand extreme weather conditions, ensuring long-term resilience.
Speaking during the project handover, Mayor Xaba urged community members to safeguard their new infrastructure. “Vandalising municipal property sets our communities back and drains resources that could be used to develop other needy areas,” he said.
Mayor Xaba also highlighted the City’s proactive steps to mitigate water shortages in areas which lacked formal piped networks by officially handing over the Tafelkop Borehole Project. Valued at approximately R1 million, this rural development initiative forms part of the installation of 94 boreholes across targeted water-scarce communities.
The borehole roll-out serves as a vital immediate intervention to stabilise alternative water supply while the Municipality continues with its broader, long-term multi-billion-rand water infrastructure overhaul across eThekwini.
The Municipality remains committed to fast-tracking the delivery of services such as water, roads, and sanitation to bridge the development gap between urban and rural wards.
Deputy Minister Mahlobo was impressed with the great strides that the city has made in improving water infrastructure.
“EThekwini has come a long way in improving water infrastructure and boosting water supply even if it means exploring alternative measures,” he said.
