The family of 38-year-old Celani Zungu is calling for justice after he was fatally run over by an eThekwini municipal water tanker in Adams Mission, south of Durban, on Monday.
According to reports, Zungu allegedly attempted to stop the tanker from delivering water to a single household, arguing that the scarce water supply should instead be shared among the wider community. During the incident, he was struck by the vehicle and died at the scene.
Speaking after the tragedy, a family representative said they are devastated by the loss and want a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Zungu’s death.
“We have lost a brother and a father. We want justice and we want those responsible to be held accountable,” the family member said.
The South African Police Service has confirmed that a culpable homicide case has been opened against the driver of the municipal water tanker, and investigations are underway.
An eThekwini Municipality spokesperson conveyed condolences to the Zungu family and said the municipality is cooperating fully with police investigations.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased. The municipality is assisting law enforcement authorities and will allow the investigation to take its course,” the spokesperson said.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, who have raised ongoing complaints about water shortages in the area. Local community members have called for improved communication and fair distribution of water to avoid similar tragedies.
