DURBAN – AmaZulu FC were crowned the 2026 Premier’s Cup champions after defeating Milford FC 2-0 in an entertaining final at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday.
Thousands of supporters packed the stadium, creating a festive atmosphere as AmaZulu lifted the coveted trophy after a disciplined performance in front of their passionate fans.Presenting the trophy, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli hailed the Premier’s Cup as more than just a football tournament, saying it plays a vital role in stimulating township and rural economies.
“The Premier’s Cup benefits hawkers who sell their wares during the game. The hospitality industry also reaps economic rewards as hotels accommodate people from afar to watch games,” said Ntuli.”Most importantly, sport unites communities by eradicating crime and forging social cohesion.”The Premier added that he had instructed authorities to continue promoting sport in townships and rural areas as a way of steering young people away from crime, drug and alcohol abuse and other social challenges.
In the grandstands, jubilant supporters celebrated AmaZulu’s victory long after the final whistle.Sipho Mkhize, an AmaZulu supporter from Umlazi, said the victory meant a great deal to the club’s loyal fans.”We’ve waited for moments like this. The team showed character and deserved the win.
This tournament gives supporters something to be proud of before the new season starts,” he said.Another spectator, Noxolo Dlamini from KwaMashu, praised the atmosphere inside the stadium.”It was wonderful seeing families, children and elderly people enjoying football together.
The Premier’s Cup brings people together and gives young players a platform to showcase their talent,” she said.Milford FC fan Sibusiso Zungu said although his team fell short, reaching the final was an achievement.”Congratulations to AmaZulu.
Milford fought hard throughout the tournament and we’ll come back stronger next year.
