In the quiet town of Mooi River, where opportunities are often scarce, a young woman has punched her way into the national spotlight. Nobengazi “Now You Know” Nobenga, the reigning South African Junior Middleweight champion, is proving that determination can overcome even the toughest odds.
Her journey began in a small, struggling boxing gym under the guidance of trainer Phoriant Mnikathi. When financial difficulties forced the gym to close, Mnikathi refused to give up. He turned his own garage into a cramped training space, where Nobenga continued to sharpen her skills. With barely enough room for proper equipment, the pair relied on discipline, focus and belief.
That belief paid off in spectacular fashion. In less than seven months, Nobenga collected three major titles — starting with a Mpumalanga crown, followed by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial title, and finally the national championship. Her defining moment came in East London, where she defeated Nomandithini Ndyambo by fourth-round technical knockout.
Boxing experts have praised her fearless style and relentless spirit, calling her one of the most exciting talents in the country. Yet despite her growing fame, Nobenga remains humble and focused.
“Hard work pays off,” said Mnikathi. “I hope her success inspires other young people.”
At just 25, Nobenga is already a symbol of hope for rural athletes. She is calling for greater investment in local sports, saying talent exists — it simply needs support.
From a simple garage to the national stage, the Lioness of Mooi River has shown that true champions are built on courage, not comfort.
