BRONKHORSTSPRUIT, GAUTENG — Concern over access to safe drinking water has taken centre stage in Bronkhorstspruit, where reports of gastrointestinal illness linked to suspected contaminated water have prompted an intensified government response.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile, in his capacity as Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Water and Sanitation, visited the area to assess the situation and receive updates on interventions aimed at protecting residents.

During his visit, Mashatile inspected the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works to assess the water supply situation before proceeding to Bronkhorstspruit District Hospital, where he received updates on affected patients and the healthcare response.

For residents, the crisis raises urgent concerns about the safety of the water they use daily for drinking, cooking and other household needs.

Government has intensified efforts to respond to the situation, including increasing water tanker capacity, strengthening public health awareness campaigns and providing additional healthcare support.

Mashatile emphasised the need for coordinated action and accountability, stressing the importance of protecting vulnerable residents and restoring public confidence in the safety of the water supply.

As efforts continue to contain the reported illness outbreak, access to clean and safe water remains a pressing priority for the community.

Residents are encouraged to follow official municipal and public health advisories on drinking water safety and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting or severe abdominal pain.

The situation highlights the vital role of reliable water infrastructure, effective monitoring and timely communication in protecting public health and ensuring that communities can access water without fear.
