Durban – The City of EThekwini is stepping up efforts to combat homelessness, with major upgrades underway at the Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter.

EThekwini Deputy Mayor and Chairperson of the Public Safety Committee, Councillor Zandile Myeni, visited the Illovu-based facility yesterday to inspect progress on the refurbishment project, which aims to expand safe accommodation for vulnerable residents.

During the visit, Councillor Myeni expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work and emphasized the importance of engaging with community members, non-profit organisations, and people experiencing homelessness to ensure the project meets local needs.

Originally approved in August 2024 as a 400-bed facility, the project has been expanded to accommodate 1 200 beds in response to growing demand across the city. “With thousands experiencing homelessness, expanding capacity was essential to provide safe accommodation and pathways out of homelessness,” Myeni said.

The refurbishment, now implemented in phases, includes upgraded walkways, landscaping, external works, and recreational spaces designed to create a dignified living environment. Phase 2 focuses on core structural upgrades, while Phase 3A aligns with Phase 1 works for streamlined execution.

The Sakhithemba shelter is central to the Municipality’s citywide strategy to provide sustainable, structured support to vulnerable residents, strengthen social cohesion, and improve urban management.

The upgraded facility is expected to significantly enhance the City’s capacity to assist those most in need.
