Durban – Leaders, government officials, business representatives and investors from across Southern Africa gathered at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) on Monday for the opening of the 9th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Industrialisation Week.
The five-day event aims to promote industrial growth, attract investment and create more jobs across the region.
It is being held under the theme: “Open, Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive Industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World.”
Opening the event, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba said Durban is honoured to host the gathering. He described the city as a gateway to Africa and said industrialisation is key to economic growth and improving people’s lives.
SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi said the event is an opportunity for countries to work together and find practical solutions to grow industries and create employment. He stressed that real progress will only come through action, partnerships and investment.
Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau said industrialisation helps countries become more productive, strengthen their economies and better deal with global challenges.
The programme includes policy discussions, investment meetings, business networking, exhibitions and visits to industrial sites. Topics such as infrastructure, technology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and market access will be discussed.
Organisers hope the event will strengthen regional trade, attract new investment and create sustainable jobs for people across Southern Africa.
