DURBAN – Two ex-African National Congress (ANC) councillors from the eThekwini Municipality have officially joined the Democratic Alliance (DA), showcasing the ongoing political shift in KwaZulu-Natal as future elections approach.
Marco Mbambo and David Ngubane were welcomed by the DA’s provincial leaders during a media briefing in Durban. The party viewed their decision to join as a sign of increasing trust in its plans for better governance and service delivery in local municipalities.
Mbambo, a former ANC ward councillor, was expelled from the ruling party last week before announcing his switch to the DA. Ngubane, who was the Ward 16 councillor, has also left the ANC to join the opposition party.
These recent defections occur as political parties aim to bolster their support ahead of upcoming elections. KwaZulu-Natal is one of South Africa’s most fiercely contested provinces, with parties vying for more influence in municipalities like eThekwini.
The ANC has encountered several internal issues in recent years, including conflicts among councillors, leadership struggles, and criticism regarding service delivery. Meanwhile, opposition parties have ramped up efforts to recruit experienced public representatives to broaden their support.
The decision by the two former ANC councillors is likely to ignite further discussions about the evolving political scene in Durban and the future power dynamics within eThekwini Municipality.
