Pietermaritzburg: The Ingonyama Trust board has been dissolved by Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso following resignations that left it understaffed and plagued by allegations of mismanagement.
His Majesty the King had publicly rejected the board, citing bad administration and wrongdoing. After consulting the King, the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, and Parliament, the Minister acted to restore proper governance.
In consultation with the King, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Province, the Chairperson of the KwaZulu Provincial House of Traditional Leaders, and Parliament, Minister Nyhontso took decisive action to dissolve the board.
Observers say this step aims to restore confidence in the Trust’s operations and ensure proper oversight of land and community interests under its mandate. A process to appoint a new, fully compliant board is expected to follow, with careful attention to governance, transparency, and accountability.
