DRIVING TECHNOLOGY FORWARD IN THE CITY

News

The City’s Asimile Siyaqhuba: Resilience Through Adversity campaign continues to highlight service delivery milestones achieved during the 2021–2026 term of office.

This week, the spotlight is on the Information Technology Directorate and its efforts to advance digital transformation, improve ICT infrastructure and expand digital inclusion across eThekwini.

Director of the Information Technology Directorate Robert Dlamini said the Public Wi-Fi Programme has significantly expanded internet access across municipal wards over the past five financial years.

With 75% of its strategic target achieved and 98% ward-level reach established, the programme supports digital inclusion, economic participation and access to online services.

Accessible Community Connectivity

Public Wi-Fi has been deployed at key locations, including:

  • Municipal libraries
  • Sizakala Centres
  • Clinics and healthcare facilities
  • Schools and community halls
  • Sports grounds and public parks
  • Beachfront areas and tourism hubs
  • Market precincts and transport nodes
  • Key economic corridors, including Florida Road.

The programme forms part of the City’s Digital Inclusion Strategy and Smart City agenda, helping connect communities to digital opportunities and services.
