A new chapter in the economic growth of Durban’s western corridor began in Shongweni on Monday, 28 September, as construction officially got underway on the R1.3 billion Farrier Business Park.
The 80 000m² warehousing and logistics development forms part of the expanding Westown precinct and is expected to bring new investment, business opportunities and employment prospects to the area.
The development is being delivered through a public-private partnership between the eThekwini Municipality and Fundamentum Property Group, as part of the broader Shongweni Urban Development.
eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba said the project represents more than bricks and mortar, highlighting its potential to change how communities and businesses connect with the city’s economy.“Today, we turn the sod for Farrier Business Park. This confirms that the City is serious about addressing the fragmented spatial patterns created by apartheid,” said Xaba.
The City has invested close to R600 million in bulk infrastructure supporting Westown and surrounding developments.
For businesses, Farrier Business Park’s location—just 1.5km from the N3 via the Shongweni Interchange and about 30km from the Port of Durban—offers direct access to major transport routes.
Fundamentum Development Company CEO Carlos Correia said the project would extend Westown’s vision into the business and logistics sector.
The wider Westown programme is expected to attract more than R15 billion in investment, potentially creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, workers and communities across the western corridor.
As construction begins, the project places Shongweni firmly on Durban’s growing economic map.
