New Sports Courts Bring Hope and Opportunity to Umzumbe Learners

News

Excitement and celebration filled the air in Umzumbe on Friday as learners, teachers, and community members gathered to witness the official handover of new multi-purpose sports courts at Umalusi Primary School and Mgamule High School.

The courts, known as “Combo Courts,” were officially handed over by Mntomuhle Khawula during visits to the two rural schools on KwaZulu-Natal’s south coast. For many learners, the new facilities represent more than just a place to play sport.

They symbolise hope, opportunity, and a chance to dream beyond the boundaries of their villages. The courts can host netball, basketball, tennis, and volleyball, giving learners access to sporting activities that were previously difficult to enjoy because of limited infrastructure.

At Umalusi Primary School in KwaQwabe village, learners sang and danced as the MEC arrived, while teachers described the project as a major boost for learner morale and school pride.Speaking during the handover, Khawula said sport has the power to unite communities, promote healthy lifestyles, and help identify future stars from disadvantaged areas.

He encouraged both schools to share the facilities with neighbouring schools so that more children across the district can benefit from access to quality sporting infrastructure.
