For motorists already feeling the pinch at the till, the road ahead is about to become even more expensive.
From Wednesday, October 7, fuel prices will rise sharply across South Africa, with 95 petrol increasing by R3.33 a litre. For inland drivers, that pushes the price above the R30 mark for the first time, to R30.25 a litre.
In coastal areas such as Durban, 95 petrol will cost R29.38 a litre, while 93 petrol will rise to R29.09. Inland motorists will pay R29.88 for 93 petrol.
Diesel users will also face steep increases, with prices rising by between R2.84 and R3.24 a litre.
For families relying on cars to get to work, take children to school or run daily errands, the increases could quickly add up. A 50-litre tank of inland 95 petrol will now cost about R1,512.50 to fill — before any further price changes.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources attributed the increases largely to rising international oil prices. Brent crude climbed from $87.89 to about $101 a barrel, driven by global tensions, uncertainty around oil shipments and higher shipping costs.
The new prices take effect at midnight on Tuesday, leaving motorists just hours to fill up at the old rates.
