The Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) was set ablaze with momentum and flair as members of the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) gathered to celebrate 25 years of innovation at their Annual Congress.

Established in 1991 with just 300 members, the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) has grown significantly, reaching over 1,700 members, according to Mohammad Baruk, Congress President for the 2025/2026 term.

In his opening address, Mr. Baruk, who serves as Chief Investment Officer at Old Mutual, emphasized the importance of giving the youth, specifically “Gen-Z,” an opportunity to shape the retail industry. He urged the industry to welcome new ideas and innovations that can be elevated to a global stage.

The SACSC Annual Congress is themed “Momentum: The Yellow Brick Road to Retail’s Future.”

During the session, Jeremy Gardiner, Director at Ninety One, presented a market overview detailing economic trends amidst geopolitical challenges, including the war in the Middle East and global unrest, examining how these events impact interest rates and trade.

The three-day SACSC Annual Congress runs at the Durban ICC from 19-21 October 2026.
