The Confederation of African Football (CAF) could take disciplinary action following allegations of a physical altercation involving Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela and Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred after Sundowns played to a goalless draw against the Angolan side in the first leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying tie on Sunday, 18 October 2026.
According to a report published by Africa Soccer on 20 October, Wiliete vice-president Vitorino Lunga Vicele condemned the alleged assault and indicated that the club intended to take the matter to CAF and the Angolan justice system.
Bianchi was reportedly taken to hospital following the incident. However, the precise circumstances surrounding the alleged confrontation, including responsibility for the incident, have not been independently established.
The report also claims that Sundowns management apologised verbally and in writing. Nevertheless, conflicting accounts remain over whether Wiliete has formally lodged a complaint with the relevant authorities.
CAF’s disciplinary framework allows for sanctions against clubs and officials where misconduct is established. Depending on the evidence and the applicable regulations, potential consequences could include fines, suspensions or bans from football-related activities.
Attention will now turn to whether Wiliete submits a formal complaint, what the match commissioner recorded, and whether CAF initiates disciplinary proceedings.
The controversy comes ahead of the return leg scheduled for Friday, 23 October 2026, with both clubs awaiting clarity on the matter.
Neither the alleged misconduct nor any potential punishment should be treated as established until the relevant authorities complete their assessment.
