An eThekwini Municipality clean-up operation in Inanda’s Ward 55 has resulted in the arrest of 19 undocumented foreign nationals, the issuing of R93 000 in fines, and the seizure of illicit cigarettes.
The four-day Operation Good Hope blitz, conducted from 20 to 23 July, targeted illegal trading, by-law violations and immigration-related offences.
Municipal officials fined one business R70 000 for operating without a valid trading permit, while another business was fined R23 000 for failing to comply with fire safety regulations.
Law enforcement officers also confiscated 15 packets of illicit cigarettes during inspections in the Umshayazafe area.
The municipality said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety, enforce municipal by-laws and support businesses that comply with the law.
Officials added that similar high-visibility enforcement operations will continue across eThekwini.
