KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli, stressed the urgent need for the provincial government to develop and implement a creative action plan to combat the widespread issue of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide affecting the province.
Premier Ntuli made these remarks during the Council Against Crime meeting at the Archie Gumede Conference Centre in Mayville on Friday, September 25, 2026.
“Our province is currently facing a significant increase in cases of GBV&F. Therefore, I urge enhanced collaboration among civil society, government bodies, and various stakeholders,” stated Premier Ntuli.
He also highlighted the importance of traditional leaders in promoting behavioural change among men and encouraging positive male role models who respect and protect women’s dignity.
The Premier referenced initiatives like #SilwaNechilo, which play a vital role in combating GBV&F throughout the year.
“Gender-based violence occurs every day. It does not take a break during the festive season; it follows women everywhere, all year round. Many people mistakenly believe that #SilwaNechilo is aimed only at foreign nationals.
“This is not the case. The individual who appeared in court on Monday, charged with raping over 14 women, is from KwaZulu-Natal. The same goes for the suspected serial rapist arrested in oPhongolo, who is also from our province,” Premier Ntuli explained.
Additionally, the Premier emphasized that women who suffer from GBV&F are not just numbers.
“Victims of GBV&F are our sisters, mothers, daughters, nieces, and wives. They are part of our community,” concluded Premier Ntuli.
