Just when many believed the annual sardine run was coming to an end, the popular fish have made a surprise return along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
Shoals of sardines were spotted at Glenmore Beach and Margate Beach on Monday, reigniting excitement among fishermen and eager sardine chasers.
Fresh activity was also reported off Port Edward on Tuesday morning, where fishing crews successfully netted sardines, with a second net pulled shortly afterwards.The latest sightings have caught many by surprise after weeks of speculation that the sardine run was winding down.
For coastal communities and fishermen, the sudden return is a reminder of just how unpredictable the sardine run can be, with shoals often appearing along different parts of the coastline without warning.
It remains unclear whether the latest activity signals another wave of sardines moving along the South Coast or simply one final surprise. For now, however, the famous KZN sardine spectacle appears to be far from over.
