The boxing community in South Africa is grieving the loss of former world champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete, who was fatally shot outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on Friday.
Tete, aged 38, was said to be arriving home when two men in balaclavas got out of a vehicle and opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 27-year-old woman accompanying the boxer was also shot multiple times and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police have started an investigation, and the reason for the attack is still unknown. Authorities are asking the public for any information that could help identify the attackers.
Tete had a remarkable boxing career, competing in 34 professional fights and winning world titles in two different weight classes. He won the IBF junior-bantamweight title in 2014 and the bantamweight title in 2017. He also held the Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a title fight.
Following his death, many tributes have been shared, with Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie calling Tete one of South Africa’s greatest fighters. He was reportedly getting ready for a comeback in the ring.
