The Olive Convention Centre in Durban was filled with excitement on Saturday as delegates gathered for the Democratic Alliance’s KwaZulu-Natal provincial congress, where new provincial leaders are expected to be elected ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.
Party members from across the province arrived at the venue singing and chanting as the DA positioned the congress as a key moment in strengthening its leadership and preparing for the November local government polls.
The congress is expected to showcase the party’s commitment to internal democracy while giving members an opportunity to shape the future direction of the organisation in KwaZulu-Natal.
Among the closely watched contests is the race for provincial leader. DA Member of Parliament Mzamo Billy is challenging current provincial leader Francois Rodgers for the top position.
Billy said he remained confident ahead of the vote, citing strong support from delegates.Billy is facing competition from eThekwini councillor Sthembiso Ngema, who is also campaigning for the leadership role.DA member and deputy mayor Sandile Mnikathi said the atmosphere at the congress reflected high levels of energy and enthusiasm among party supporters.
Meanwhile, DA leader Chris Pappas urged delegates to use the strength of the party to address challenges facing communities, including unemployment, crime, and lack of economic opportunities.Pappas said many residents were struggling with safety concerns, while businesses eager to invest continued to face obstacles.
He told delegates they had a responsibility to restore hope and help improve communities. He added that the election would play an important role in shaping the future of cities and municipalities, saying the DA remained committed to delivering meaningful change for residents.
