Professor Tricia Naicker from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has been awarded the Distinguished Young Woman Researcher in Natural and Engineering Sciences Award at the 23rd South African Women in Science Awards.
Naicker, who heads UKZN’s Catalysis and Peptide Research Unit, was honored for her innovative work in drug discovery, especially her research focused on combating antimicrobial resistance by enhancing the effectiveness of current antibiotics.
Some compounds developed through her interdisciplinary research are now moving into Phase 1 clinical trials, representing a significant advancement in addressing one of the world’s increasing health issues.
Reflecting on her achievement, Naicker mentioned that the award acknowledges not just her scientific journey, but also the dedication, passion, and support she has received throughout.
“I hope it encourages young women to have confidence in themselves, chase their dreams, and understand that they can also create a significant impact through science,” she stated.UKZN praised Naicker, calling her accomplishment a point of pride for the university and a motivation for young women and girls aspiring to careers in science, technology, and innovation.
