IXOPO, KwaZulu-Natal — Christ The King Hospital has made history with the launch of the Harry Gwala Health District’s first-ever Mobile X-Ray Clinic, bringing free and accessible tuberculosis (TB) screening closer to communities in Ixopo.
The mobile unit, permanently stationed at the hospital, focuses on digital chest X-rays to help detect TB cases quickly. Community members do not need referrals or appointments and can simply walk in for screening at no cost.
A Diagnostic Radiographer, Enrolled Nurse and Office Assistant operate the unit, ensuring patients receive professional and compassionate care.
The X-rays are assessed on-site for abnormalities associated with TB. Patients whose results suggest possible TB are immediately referred to the hospital’s Out-Patients Department for further clinical assessment and, where necessary, treatment.
The initiative aims to remove barriers such as transport costs, referrals and long waiting periods that often prevent people from accessing healthcare.
Health officials say mobile screening can help identify TB cases that may otherwise remain undiagnosed, particularly among underserved communities.
For residents of Ixopo and surrounding villages, the service represents a major step towards bringing healthcare directly to the people and strengthening the fight against TB.
