The ANC in eThekwini says it is in a strong state of readiness for the upcoming local government elections, with 98% of its candidate selection process completed and the remaining 2% expected to be finalised by the weekend.
Speaking during a media briefing, ANC eThekwini spokesperson Thanduxolo Sabelo said the organisation is prepared to contest all 112 municipal wards.
He said candidates were chosen through community meetings rather than internal ANC gatherings, describing the process as transparent and community-driven. Some meetings reportedly attracted up to 6,000 residents who voted for their preferred candidates.
Sabelo said improved cooperation between the ANC leadership and the eThekwini Municipality administration has strengthened service delivery efforts. He acknowledged that water shortages remain the municipality’s biggest challenge, adding that the party’s priority is to ensure every household has access to reliable piped water instead of depending on water tankers.
The ANC also alleged that recent water disruptions in Clermont, Chesterville and Westville were caused by deliberate sabotage of municipal infrastructure, claiming some individuals intentionally closed water pipelines to benefit water tanker contracts or damage the party’s image. Residents were urged to help protect municipal infrastructure.
Meanwhile, eThekwini Municipal Speaker Thabani Nyawose announced that the ANC has expelled Ward 8 councillor Marco Mbambo, saying his ANC membership and position as a public representative have been terminated. Nyawose said the party has established a team to identify members allegedly working against the organisation from within its own structures, adding that the move forms part of efforts to strengthen discipline, unity and public confidence ahead of the elections.
