KwaNyuswa, KwaZulu-Natal – eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba has unveiled several multi-million-rand service delivery projects aimed at improving water and road infrastructure in the Outer West region.
The projects were officially launched on Thursday, 23 July, during a visit led by Mayor Xaba, accompanied by members of the Municipal Executive Committee and local councillors, including Thembo Ntuli, Zama Sokhabase, Themba Mvubu, and Sifiso Mkhize.
The programme concluded with a community engagement attended by thousands of residents from KwaNyuswa, KwaNgcolosi, Embo and surrounding areas.
Addressing residents, Mayor Xaba said the Municipality remains committed to strengthening water infrastructure to meet the growing demands of expanding communities.
He highlighted the expansion of the KwaNqetho Water Reservoir, which was upgraded from a capacity of one megalitre to six megalitres after a 2021 study found that the KwaNgcolosi area had grown by an additional 2,500 households.
“The Municipality took the decision to increase the reservoir’s capacity to ensure that communities have access to a more reliable water supply,” said Xaba.
He also announced plans to construct a new reservoir in KwaNyuswa, where intermittent water supply continues to affect residents. According to the Mayor, a suitable site has already been identified for the project.
“As a city, we continue to invest in water infrastructure to stabilise water supply in both urban and rural communities so that no one is left behind,” he added.
In addition to water projects, Mayor Xaba said the Municipality has completed six access roads in KwaNyuswa and Maphephetheni, including the rehabilitation of roads severely damaged during the devastating 2022 floods.
Residents welcomed the projects, expressing hope that the investment will improve access to essential services and support economic development in the region.
The Municipality said the projects form part of its broader commitment to improving service delivery and infrastructure across eThekwini.
