Severe Storm Threat Puts eThekwini on Alert

Residents across eThekwini are being urged to exercise caution as severe thunderstorms are expected to batter the region following a Level 2 weather warning.The alert, issued by the South African Weather Service, came into effect on Sunday and is set to remain until Monday evening.

Authorities warn that the storms could bring heavy rainfall, damaging winds, hail and intense lightning.Municipal officials say the adverse conditions may lead to flooding in low-lying areas, waterlogged roads and reduced visibility, increasing the risk of accidents.

Informal settlements are expected to be particularly vulnerable, with residents encouraged to secure belongings and remain alert.Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously, reduce speed and maintain safe following distances, while avoiding flooded routes.

The municipality also cautioned against crossing rivers and streams, especially where water levels are high.Emergency response teams, including Disaster Management units, have been placed on standby to respond swiftly to any incidents.

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors where possible and monitor official updates as conditions evolve across KwaZulu-Natal.
