The sudden death of a 15-year-old learner during a school sports match has sent shockwaves through the Free State education community.

Free State Department of Education MEC, Dr MJ Maboya, expressed deep sorrow following the passing of Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a Grade 9 learner at HTS Sasolburg. The tragic incident occurred on Friday, April 10, during an under-15 match at DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg.

According to the department, Nhlakanipho experienced severe breathing difficulties while playing against Sasolburg High School. He was rushed to Sasolburg Hospital, where he was later declared deceased.

Maboya described the incident as heartbreaking, extending condolences to the learner’s family, friends, and the school community. “We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of such a young life. Our thoughts are with everyone affected during this difficult time,” he said.

The match formed part of the long-standing FNB Classic Clash, an annual sporting event between the two schools that has been held for nearly five decades.

The department has pledged support to both the bereaved family and the schools involved, while commending the swift response of medical personnel. Counselling services are expected to be provided to learners, teachers, and the broader school community.
