Four men linked to a wave of violent crimes across multiple KwaZulu-Natal communities were shot dead in a dramatic police shootout in Bellair on Monday afternoon, raising fresh questions about escalating gang activity and police tactics.
According to police, the suspects had been on the radar for a string of serious offences, including murder, attempted murder of police officers, hijackings, and armed robberies targeting both homes and businesses. Communities in Mbumbulu, KwaMakhutha, Ntuzuma and Folweni had reportedly been living in fear as the group operated with increasing boldness.
The breakthrough came when Crime Intelligence officers tracked the suspects to the Bellair area. When police attempted to stop their vehicle, the suspects allegedly fled, triggering a high-speed chase that ended at a house believed to be used as a hideout.
What followed was a fierce exchange of gunfire. Police say all four suspects were fatally wounded during the shootout. Inside the property, officers recovered four firearms, believed to have been used in multiple crimes.
Notably, no police officers were injured.
However, the operation was not without gaps. A fifth suspect managed to escape during the chaos and remains at large, prompting an ongoing manhunt.
While police have hailed the operation as a success, the incident underscores the persistent threat of heavily armed criminal networks—and the volatile confrontations often required to stop them.
