The team at Independent Online (IOL) is grieving the loss of the esteemed journalist Jonisayi Maromo,
who died in Zimbabwe on Wednesday during a visit to see his unwell mother. Maromo was well-known as a committed and courageous reporter, with a career that included several leading South African news organizations. Prior to his time at IOL, he was employed at the South African Press Association (SAPA) and subsequently at the African News Agency (ANA), where he earned a reputation for his tenacious reporting and keen insight into significant stories.
Since joining IOL, Maromo quickly became a vital member of the newsroom, recognized for his kindness, humor, and insatiable curiosity. He chased stories that often sparked national discussions. One of his most significant contributions was the investigative “Scammed” series, which revealed intricate romance scams aimed at retired public servants. These reports highlighted how fraudsters preyed on vulnerable individuals and helped to increase public awareness of this rising threat.
Throughout his career, Maromo reported on a diverse array of topics, including the Presidency, politics,
and international relations. His knack for breaking news and providing insightful analysis earned him
great respect from his colleagues. Colleagues have shared tributes that reflect a journalist deeply passionate about truth and narrative. He is survived by his partner Aldrine and family, who have received condolences from the wider journalism community.
