Gospel artist Ntokozo Ngongoma says he requested removal from the CLIMA Africa Awards because his views no longer aligned with the organisers.
Mr. Ngongoma said he posted two to three weeks ago about supporting March and March and putting South Africa first. The response from CLIMA’s administration convinced him they were committed to misunderstanding his position. He described it as being out of sync with the truth and reality being presented and said it was safer not to travel to Nigeria amid rising racial tensions.
He explained March and March as a civil rights movement focused on holding government accountable on immigration law. The concern, he said, is undocumented entry into South Africa, which he argues makes policing harder, places pressure on hospitals and schools, and is linked to some criminal activity. The solution, from his view, is for government to enforce the law so everyone enters the country lawfully.
On criticism that his stance is xenophobic, Mr. Ngongoma said South Africans are tolerant and welcoming. He stressed that the issue is not with people, but with illegal immigration.
To young South Africans watching the situation, his message was clear: do not compromise your convictions for recognition. As he put it, I will never let someone buy my truth.
If he spoke to CLIMA organisers or Nigerian fans who disagree, he would ask them to understand that the call is for lawful immigration and for South Africans to be protected at home.
