Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, KZN – In a decisive action aimed at stabilizing one of South Africa’s largest
conservation organizations, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has terminated the employment of three senior
executives as part of a broader organizational clean-up initiative. The announcement was made by CEO Sihle Mkhize during a press conference at the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi game reserve on Tuesday. Mkhize stated that upon taking on his position, he discovered the organization plagued by mismanagement, with numerous allegations of corruption prevalent in media coverage.

During the height of the crisis, a service provider responsible for managing one of Ezemvelo’s
facilities reportedly misappropriated funds for personal use, leading to ongoing legal action to recover
the lost money and prevent future misconduct. “To stabilize the organization, the board sanctioned a forensic investigation,” Mkhize explained. “As a result, three senior executives were let go to eliminate the issues and enable Ezemvelo to concentrate on its core mission.”

The clean-up also included initiatives to address rhino poaching. All frontline personnel underwent
polygraph examinations, with those who did not pass being reassigned from high-risk wildlife zones.
Despite initial pushback, unions and staff members backed the initiative after Mkhize himself took the
test first. While the agency is making progress, Mkhize cautioned that challenges persist. “We are not
completely out of the woods yet, but we are moving in the right direction,” he remarked.
The terminations represent a crucial advancement in Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s mission to rebuild
public confidence and enhance conservation efforts in KwaZulu-Natal.
