South African visual activist and photographer Zanele Muholi has been announced as the 2026 recipient of the esteemed Hasselblad Award, which is widely seen as the largest and most prestigious photography prize in the world. The news was met with joy at the Market Photo Workshop, where Muholi is an ambassador, alumnus, and long-time collaborator. The Hasselblad Award celebrates exceptional contributions to photography and visual storytelling.
As part of this recognition, Muholi will be awarded a gold medal, a significant cash prize, and a highly sought-after Hasselblad camera. Muholi, who is internationally recognized for their impactful work documenting the lives and challenges of Black LGBTQ+ communities in South Africa, has dedicated decades to using photography as a means of activism. Their portraits and visual stories have been showcased worldwide, sparking important discussions about identity, equality, and human rights. As part of the award festivities, Muholi will be featured in a major solo exhibition at the Hasselblad Center.
This exhibition is set to run from October 10, 2026, to April 4, 2027, and will present a collection of work that highlights the photographer’s significant career. The award celebrations will occur during Hasselblad Award Week in Gothenburg, featuring various cultural events, including a seminar in collaboration with the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland, a special concert with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and an artist talk with Muholi. The Market Photo Workshop hailed this recognition as a proud moment, commending Muholi’s ongoing global influence and contribution to contemporary photography.
