Durban – Ward 28 councillor Ntando Khuzwayo has officially signed a memorandum of demands, calling for better support and inclusion of people living with autism. The memorandum was handed over during a silent protest organised by Action in Autism at Durban City Hall on Thursday.
The organisation is urging the municipality to employ autistic people, improve inclusive services, and develop sensory-friendly public parks. Prashant Parusnath, an advocacy officer at Action in Autism, said one of the biggest challenges for people with autism is finding employment and being accepted in the workplace.
“There are many children who struggle to get into schools, and even when they do, they lack proper support,” he said, adding that more resources are needed in schools, universities and workplaces. Parent Nokuthula Mkono said families also face difficulties, including a lack of specialised schools in Durban.
She hopes the protest will raise awareness and push government to provide more support programmes. Community member Bandile Mamba said people living with autism deserve equal opportunities and should be treated with dignity and respect
