Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has voiced frustration with the Premier Soccer League (PSL) over the scheduling of domestic fixtures close to key CAF Champions League matches. Speaking after Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Orbit College in the North West on Tuesday, Cardoso described the situation as detrimental to South African football.

“I think today is a little bit a dark day for football in South Africa,” he said. “We are not pleased about the situation that we were put in. No one should have to play a league match just three days before a Champions League fixture.” Sundowns are set to host Malian side Stade Malien in the first leg of the CAF Champions League quarterfinals on Friday.

Cardoso emphasized that proper scheduling is essential for South African clubs to perform successfully on the international stage. The Portuguese manager has previously raised concerns over fixture congestion, which has intensified due to a packed schedule of home and continental matches. Despite the challenges, Sundowns remain top of the domestic standings and continue to advance in the Champions League, highlighting the team’s resilience amid a demanding calendar.
The PSL has yet to respond to Cardoso’s latest remarks.
