The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs has officially launched the highly anticipated Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026, promising a major boost for tourism, investment, and job creation across the continent.
Speaking at the media launch, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille highlighted the significance of the event, which will take place from 11 to 14 May 2026 at the Durban International Convention Centre. She described the Indaba as a celebration of tourism professionals and a platform to showcase Africa’s diverse travel destinations to the world.
De Lille noted that tourism continues to be a key driver of economic growth, revealing that the 2025 edition of the Indaba recorded a 36% increase in domestic travel. “This demonstrates the growing appetite for local tourism and the sector’s resilience,” she said.
This year’s event is expected to draw participation from 52 countries, including leaders from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC). In a notable shift, eight new infrastructure projects—outside of the traditionally dominant safari sector—have been secured, signalling diversification in tourism investment.
The 2025 Indaba generated direct investment worth R246 million, and organisers are confident that the 2026 edition will surpass that figure.
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to officially open the event, underscoring its importance as one of the continent’s premier tourism gatherings.
