PEWG DRIVES PROGRESS ON ECONOMIC GROWTH AND SERVICE DELIVERY

The Presidential eThekwini Working Group (PeWG) has reported encouraging progress in advancing service delivery, strengthening economic development, and unlocking strategic infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality of life for residents and enhancing Durban’s competitiveness as an investment and tourism destination.

The latest PeWG Co-Chairs Report highlights improvements across several key intervention areas. Municipal financial performance has stabilised, while governance measures have contributed to improved compliance and accountability. Progress has also been recorded in reducing water losses, strengthening tourism promotion, and advancing catalytic investment projects valued at more than R32 billion.

Through Workstream 8, focused on economic development, the municipality and its partners have advanced public-private partnership frameworks, industrial corridor planning, development planning reforms, and interventions to address problem buildings. While further work is required, structures are now in place to accelerate implementation and unlock investment opportunities.

Significant progress has also been achieved through the GO!Durban Integrated Public Transport Network, with key regulatory approvals secured, engagement completed with 18 taxi associations, and operational readiness activities under way ahead of the planned launch of the C3 Corridor service in December 2026.

The report further notes advances in safety and security initiatives. In the safety and security sector, interventions include the continued rollout of the Command Centre, strengthening visible policing initiatives, expansion of forensic laboratory capacity, and efforts led by the presidency to address critical port scanning infrastructure requirements.

PeWG Co-Chair Mike Mabuyakhulu said the collaborative work of all spheres of government and social partners was beginning to yield tangible results: “The Presidential eThekwini Working Group continues to play a critical role in unblocking challenges, strengthening coordination, and driving implementation. We are seeing meaningful progress in key areas such as infrastructure development, transport, investment attraction, and service delivery. While challenges remain, our focus is on accelerating delivery and ensuring that residents and businesses experience the benefits of these interventions.”

Key priorities for the next phase include securing funding for the uMlazi Canal upgrade, accelerating rail recovery initiatives, reducing non-revenue water losses, and strengthening coordination to support economic growth and improved service delivery outcomes.

“This city belongs to its people and stakeholders, thus continuous updates to them is at the heart of our social contract. Soon, through the communication and marketing workstream, we will be rolling out stakeholder accountability sessions to ensure that no one is left behind in terms of being informed about the progress the PeWG is registering,” added Mabuyakhulu
