Authorities in Buffalo City have closed two beaches following a fatal shark attack that claimed the life of a female swimmer at Orient Beach in Gompo City on Tuesday morning, 20 October 2026.
According to a report published by Isolezwe, the experienced swimmer was enjoying her usual morning swim when she was allegedly attacked by a shark.
Witnesses reportedly heard the woman screaming for help as she struggled in the water. She sustained severe injuries and was pulled from the sea by lifeguards, who attempted to save her life by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Emergency services also responded to the incident, but sadly, the woman was declared dead.
Following the tragedy, the Buffalo City Municipality announced the closure of Orient Beach and Eastern Beach as a precautionary measure.
The municipality has urged residents and visitors to stay out of the water at both beaches until further notice. Beachgoers have also been advised to remain vigilant at other coastal locations and follow all safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about beach safety, with officials urging the public to take warnings seriously while further updates are awaited.
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid the affected beaches until the municipality officially announces their reopening.
