Small businesses from townships are getting a big push at the Durban Business Fair.
The fair held a Business Indaba this week. The theme was Growing Thriving Township Economies, Connecting businesses to markets and broader opportunities.
The panel had five speakers which were, Nondumiso Mthwa from Idwala Property Group, Cebo Gama from Vinyl Entertainment, Paul Sessions from Transnet, Bongani Mkhize from the Department of Economic Development, and Thami Sithole from PRASA.
They spoke about the problems small businesses face. Many struggle to find markets, get transport, and get money to grow. The speakers said government and big companies must help township businesses connect to real opportunities.
Local makers showed their work. Tables were full of handmade leather bags, belts, sandals, and beaded necklaces. Some were making the beads and bags right at the table. People could see the skill and buy directly.
Community radio stations such as Izwi Lomzansi, Inanda FM, Intokozo FM were also there. They were broadcasting live from the fair, talking to business owners and sharing their stories.
The fair will be on until the 4th of October.
