Suspended deputy national police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya’s alleged WhatsApp exchanges with a 16-year-old girl have been placed before the court as part of the State’s case against him.
The investigating officer read several messages during the ongoing bail proceedings, detailing what prosecutors allege were sexual advances and explicit communications between Sibiya and the teenager.
The State alleges that the teenager, who is the daughter of one of Sibiya’s close associates, was sexually groomed through electronic communication between July and August 2026.
Prosecutors further allege that Sibiya received and distributed sexually explicit images and videos involving the minor, and encouraged her to send him additional material.
The messages form part of the evidence being presented as investigators build their case against the suspended police official, who faces charges including rape and sexual grooming.
The defence is expected to challenge the State’s interpretation of the messages, as well as the circumstances surrounding the alleged communications.
Sibiya has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. The bail application is continuing.
